We may forget (or not know) that to get from Nazareth to Bethlehem today you have to cross the barrier that the state of Israel has created to separate itself from the Palestinian territories.
Mary and Joseph would probably not have much problem as they are Israeli citizens. Were they Palestinians (Arabs) they may wait for hours at a checkpoint, or may be denied entry at all.
There is a certain sense of irony about a ghetto wall. Many Jews would have experienced one to keep them in. This one is to keep others out.
Perhaps ghetto is a state of mind
